Walker Nursery was founded in the 1950’s by Sam Walker and his five brothers, in McMinnville, Tennessee. The early years were mainly concentrated in fruit tree production, and in the 1960’s, dogwoods had become a large part of production. Shade trees and shrubs were introduced to the production cycle in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.

For many years Walker was a local grower for a larger nursery. It was during the 1970’s when Walker Nursery was introduced to re-wholesalers from the mid-west and east coast. Throughout the 1970’s Walker Nursery grew several varieties of B&B Peach trees for Shemin Nursery of Greenwich, Connecticut, and produced shade trees, shrubs, and ornamental flowering trees for many other re-wholesalers and landscapers. It was in the mid 1980’s when Walker’s product list had become geared toward retailers as well.
Eric purchased an additional 215 acres and the inventory of Ben Lomand Nursery, which has given Walker a chance to grow different varieties of trees and shrubs including many of the newer cornus varieties. Today Walker Nursery is growing on 600 acres of highly fertile soil.   In February of 1988, current owner Eric Walker took over the day-to-day operations of Walker Nursery. Eric graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1986 with a degree in Agricultural Economics with a minor in Marketing. All the while, Walker Nursery continued to grow through the 1990’s. 1997 proved to be a trying year for the company. The last remaining founders, Sam Walker and brother Jack Walker passed away. But with perseverance, 1998 proved to be a year for continued growth.
